Are College Graduates Ready To Enter The Job Market?

CollegeGradYou celebrated, you traveled and now it’s really time to get to work. Now that summer is almost over what next?

The first part of summer is when employers get flooded with resumes from hopeful college graduates looking for jobs. A bachelor’s degree doesn’t hold as much status today as it did a decade ago, but you still have to have one to be considered for any position.

What may be even more important than your degree now is your actual work experience. Your experience can be in the form of internships or even related part-time jobs. Knowing a lot about a particular subject that you majored in is great, but employers want more than that. They want your resume to show that you can handle the stresses of a work environment, rather than just making good grades in the classroom.

Even if you don’t have work experience in the position that you are applying for, don’t get too discouraged. Employers will sometimes give you a shot as long as you have proven yourself to handle a challenging work environment during your school years.

There’s nothing more that you can add to your resume now that you’ve graduated, so the next step is nailing your interview. Here are some common questions that should get you thinking and preparing to answer:

What skills do you have that will help you transition from school to work?

How do you feel that college has prepared you for a career?

What qualities do you have that will make you successful in this position?

What makes you think you are prepared for this job?

If you had to go to college all over again, what would you do differently?

Some graduates may have a hard time answering these questions if they don’t have time to think about them. There are no right or wrong answers, but one thing for certain is that employers aren’t looking for cookie cutter answers. Give specific examples of your experiences whenever possible and you will increase your chances of landing your coveted job. Most importantly relax and just be yourself! Many companies are looking for young, eager and trainable talent.
